- Student Council:
The Student Council plays a very import role in every school. They help share students' ideas, interests, and concerns with the teachers and principal. They help students raise funds for school wide projects. They assist the community when they are in need of aid. Being a Student Council member is something that helps students become responsible and active members of the community.
Role of Student Council members:
- Attend school meetings twice a month
- Meet with classmates to discuss ideas and concerns
- Work at special events
- Serve as a positive role model to other students
- Get Fit:
Get Fit groups meet with Mrs. Johnson. Students participate in physical activities that help them live a healthy life-style.
- Safety Patrol:
Safety patrol consists of 5th grade students selected through
a process. Fourth grade teachers collect essays from interested
students, collaborate with all teachers in the grade level, and
select students based on characteristics that are needed to
qualify students as quality safety patrols at the school.
Students patrol hallways before school to limit problems with
younger students while waiting for school to begin.
Safety patrols participate in other school activities such
as helping out with honor rolls and other assemblies.
- Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE):
Our D.A.R.E. Officer is Officer Stewart
- Nova Environmental Awareness Team (NEAT):
We are Nova's Environmental Awareness Team.
We are a team of parents and students working to champion the environmental issues & needs of our school and community. We have a two-fold mission;
we will develop an awareness of the multiplicity symbiosis and balance of our environment through recreational and educational interdisciplinary experiences and classroom extensions.
We will promote stewardship of our environment by meeting the needs of our gardens and green spaces through development, presevation, and conservation.
- ChessNUTS:
A club that meets one morning each week to learn the strategies and skills involved in mastering the game of Chess.
More INFO when the school year starts! If you would like to volunteer to help teach the students in small informal groups, please contact the PTA.
- Peer Mediation:
Nova Blanche has a Conflict Mediation Program. The mediators are trained fourth and fifth graders who spend a lot of time training and learning the fine points of mediation.
Two students - one boy and one girl - from each fourth grade class are selected to become mediator trainees. These students must get parental/guardian permission because they are out of class for one hour one day per week and are considered responsible, trustworthy, and reliable enough to not only make up the work they missed in class but, to also learn the strategies involved in mediation. These are lifelong skills that the students will be able to implement in every aspect of their lives once they are fully trained. The students train for about 13 - 16 weeks, including simulations of conflicts they assist in mediating. The students are assigned buddies and work as teams in fifth grade. They do actual mediations in the Guidance Office under the auspices of our staff on a rotating basis when the need arises. They usually participate in anywhere from 3-6 mediations per year depending upon the number of conflicts that arise and the number of teams of mediators we have.
- Meet The Masters:
Meet the Masters is both an art history and art appreciation program
that was designed to allow children to become familiar with the world
of art. It is designed to teach our children how to appreciate all
aspects of art, establish a creative thought process, and to acquaint
them with various artists and styles. The children are usually
presented with two prints, given a brief synopsis of the artist and
art style, asked questions that generate discussion, and then they
create their own masterpiece through various mediums. A big thank you
to our wonderful volunteers who make it all possible! Anyone wishing
to volunteer, please contact the PTA office.
- Morning News Crew:
Our news crew is selected from 5th grade students.
Teachers make recommendations
of responsible students who might want a career in
Journalism. The duties include news anchors, breaking
news reporters, camera man, flag holder for the pledge of
allegiance, weather reporters and operators for video tape
machines and other equipment. Our parent volunteers do a
fantastic job producing and directing our daily news.
- Art Club:
Students in grades fourth and fifth who have been recommended by their classroom teachers and Ms. Brown may be in the art club. Students meet once a week and work with a variety of media and projects. Our goal is to nurture creative thinking, make connections between art and humans throughout history, and provide opportunities to increase art skills.
